Vanderbilt Summer Science Academy

There are two major tracks within the VSSA: the Basic Science Programs for undergraduates interested in careers in research, and the Undergraduate Clinical Research Internships Program for undergraduates who wish to pursue a career in medicine. International students are encouraged to apply to the Vanderbilt International Scholar Program.

Basic Science Program Benefits
Eligibility
Requirements vary by program. Please see each program's home page to determine the prerequisites.

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Strong desire to pursue an advanced degree (Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D)
  • Online application deadline is FEBRUARY 1

Benefits

  • Stipend  ranging from $2500-$4000, depending upon program.
  • Dormitory housing supplements are provided by most programs.



Undergraduate Clinical Research Internship Program
Eligibility

  • GPA of 3.5 or greater.
  • Strong desire to pursue an M.D. degree or a combined M.D./Ph.D. degree.
  • Preferencegiven to candidates with prior research experience and advanced science courses.
  • Online application deadline is FEBRUARY 1

Benefits

  • On-campus housing and $1,500 stipend

  • Round with a hospital-based general medicine physician team each week.

  • Research mentor and clinical or research project in students area of interest (if available). 
    Requires on-site orientation and training prior to beginning their research and clinical experiences.

  • Weekly seminars to discuss various topics, including medical school admissions, medical student life, medical education, and other issues related to healthcare.

  • Program participants will be required to present their research during a poster presentation at the conclusion of the program.
